Born and raised in the South, no one commented when I smoked too much, spent hours on end playing trivia at the bar, overate, and dieted like no body’s business. But when I traded all that for digging through bins of cheap stuff at thrift shops, one comment was one everyone’s lips. “She’s obsessed!”
Maybe I started the classification when I brought home the green parrot, and daringly stated, “I think I have a problem.”
Now I ask you, what’s not to love about this parrot?
She’s got beautiful feathers…
A gold beak..
and..
Gold toes!
I fell in love with her at The Goodwill. Oh yes, I call it THE Goodwill. It started out as poking fun at people who say THE Wal-mart, and now I’ve been sucked into to their glorification of their store of choice. I don’t go to any Goodwill, I go to THE Goodwill.
But I digress. I was talking about the parrot. I saw her sitting on a display shelf and sauntered over to take a look at the price. $6.99. Oh no way, I was not going to pay $6.99 for a stupid ceramic parrot. It wasn’t Senior Day with it’s 25% off reward for older than dirt. This wasn’t a 50% off green or purple tag wares night. I never paid more than a dollar or two for something unless it was furniture. Nope. If I wanted this blue-green bird, I was going to have to pay full price.
$6.99 for a ceramic parrot.
I didn’t need it. My summer cubiclescape had already been packed up in my mind. I was looking for Fall decorations.
Yet, there she was. Shiny. Pretty. And of course, the clincher, she was green and blue. My favorite colors. And……Sold!
So I walked in the house with a blue-green parrot, plopped her down in front of the family and dared anyone to call me out before I called myself out. I have a problem. I like stuff. Sometimes weird stuff. Sometimes pretty stuff. Old stuff stuff, new stuff, especially green and blue stuff. And I love finding stuff for an absurdly great price.
As I cradled PollyWannaCracker and pleaded my case, I turned her over to show the manufacturers label on the bottom, “Andrea by Sadek”.
I heard a soft rattling coming from inside her hollow body. Something orange was peaking out. I tentatively extracted the little piece of paper.
There was the original sales sticker, $72.00 and a date 1993. Oh yeah. Back in 1993 someone thought this parrot was worth $72 and here it is 16 years later and I got this highly collectible parrot for only $6.99. Boo-yah!
Obsessed with buying interesting things for very little money?
Guilty!
